Temescal, located in North Oakland, has enjoyed a zesty renaissance in recent years. With a population of younger families, young professionals, and just people looking for a more affordable alternative to the Mission District, it’s quite vibrant. It’s located between Rockridge and Interstate 580 - commuters can take advantage of the Rockridge or MacArthur BART stations, or nearby Highway 24.

Temescal was one of the first city neighborhoods, and so has architectural styles ranging from Victorian to newer builds. The reason it was tapped by This Old House as a Best Neighborhood, however is for the abundance of 1920’s stucco bungalows that had the magazine weak at the knees over their interior details. 

The residents skew young, and the restaurant scene is pretty incredible. Budding chefs migrated over from the Gourmet Ghetto in search of better rents and a receptive clientele. Walk along Telegraph Avenue, and you’ll see every type of cuisine, craft beer, and of course plenty of coffee shops. If you’re visiting the area to get the general feel, you’ll have no problem finding choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - and still be able to hit the Temescal Farmers Market to take something fresh and crunchy home with you. 

It goes without saying that there are community arts events taking place. First Fridays at the local art galleries are popular, and Temescal hosts a street fair and Taste of Temescal Festival annually. For families, Studio One offers a variety of hands-on art classes. 

Outdoor recreation is easy - the area is still close to all the area hiking destinations, and Temescal has a city pool that offers lessons and open swim. There’s also nearby Mossdale Park, which has sports fields and a dog park for your furry family member.
