Safety Tips on Carbon Monoxide
June 20th
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
Today’s blog focuses on carbon monoxide poisoning . What it is, how to identify it and what to do if someone you know has carbon monoxide poisoning. These tips will help keep your family safe.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odor, CO is often mixed with other gases that do have an odor. So, you can inhale carbon monoxide right along with gases that you can smell and not even know that CO is present. CO is a common industrial hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of material containing carbon such as natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal, or wood. Forges, blast furnaces and coke ovens produce CO, but one of the most common sources of exposure in the workplace is the internal combustion engine.
How does CO harm you? Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen.
Large amounts of CO can overcome you in minutes without warning — causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate. Besides tightness across the chest, initial symptoms of CO poisoning may include headache, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, or nausea. Sudden chest pain may occur in people with angina.
During prolonged or high exposures, symptoms may worsen and include vomiting, confusion and collapse in addition to loss of consciousness and muscle weakness. Symptoms can vary widely from person to person. CO poisoning may occur sooner in those most susceptible: young children, the elderly, people with lung or heart disease, people at high altitudes, or those who already have elevated CO blood levels, such as smokers.
Also, CO poisoning poses a special risk to fetuses. CO poisoning can be reversed if caught in time. But even if you recover, acute poisoning may result in permanent damage to the parts of your body that require a lot of oxygen such as the heart and brain. Significant reproductive risk is also linked to CO.
What can you do if you suspect that someone has been poisoned with CO? When you suspect CO poisoning, promptly taking the following actions can save lives:
• Move the victim immediately to fresh air in an open area.
• Call 911 or another local emergency number for medical attention or assistance.
• Administer 100 percent oxygen using a tightfitting mask if the victim is breathing.
• Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation if the victim has stopped breathing.
Warning: You may be exposed to fatal levels of CO poisoning in a rescue attempt. Rescuers should be skilled at performing recovery operations and using recovery equipment. Employers should make sure that rescuers are not exposed to dangerous CO levels when performing rescue operations.

🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
The Oakland Zoo Centennial is here and it’s time enjoy the celebrations! There is nothing better than taking the family to the Zoo and experience nature at it’s finest.
100 Years of Animal Love
June 6th
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
The Oakland Zoo Centennial is here and it’s time enjoy the celebrations!
There is nothing better than taking the family to the Zoo and experience nature at it’s finest.
The Oakland Zoo was originally located at 19th and Harrison streets in downtown Oakland, the Zoo has changed locations several times over the last century.
But what hasn’t changed is the fact that the Oakland Zoo is so entrenched in the fabric of our city and community, it’s hard to imagine a time without it. Officially founded on June 6, 1922, by Henry A. Snow, and later operated by his son Sidney Snow, we, along with the City of Oakland, have seen such tremendous progress and outstanding growth over the past 100 years.
As we honor and reflect upon our long history and celebrate this amazing milestone, it is with great pride and deep gratitude that we reflect on the impact we strive to make every day on our guests, the animals in our care, and our ever-growing and evolving commitment to wildlife conservation here at home and across the globe.
Throughout this year, we will celebrate our centennial with great pride and thoughtful reflection of years past. And as we look forward to the next 100 years, we fully commit to a purpose-driven future where nature and wildlife not just survive but thrive.
We hope that future will be filled with wildlife and nature-inspired youth that grow into our future generation of scientists. Scientists that are the solution to the climate change crisis that impacts us all – both humans and animals alike. And we hope you will help us celebrate the past 100 years and the next 100 years come.

Simone Spotlight - Cost VS Value for Home Renovations
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
It’s that time of year again when you decide what renovations you will be tackling in your home and while some home renovations are purely aesthetic, other renovations can add tremendous value and increase your home property values.
How to Add Value to Your Home
May 30th
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
It’s that time of year again when you decide what renovations you will be tackling in your home and while some home renovations are purely aesthetic, other renovations can add tremendous value and increase your home property values.
Before you decide what home renovation you should tackle, it’s best to know that there is a difference between cost vs value.
It has been in my experience that home owners believe that if they make a $100k addition, improvement, or renovation, that will increase their property’s value by $100k, but that is not true.
The fact is that every improvement, addition and renovation adds a different value to a property. The cost of an improvement, addition or renovation of a property does not determine the value. So how do you as a home owner know how much value you will add when making a renovation?
There are value calculators that are specific to neighborhoods such as East Bay that can give you an approximate value the renovation you are adding to your home could have. There is literature and guides that can give you an idea of the increased value a renovation will have.
To give you a better idea of cost vs value, I have provided an itemized table that shows cost vs value in the past years in our local area.
If you have any questions about what are the best renovations to add value to your home, contact me to schedule an appointment to go over any questions you may have.

Simone Spotlight - Summer Maintenance
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
Naturally, you may not want to spend a large chunk of your free time this summer doing home maintenance. But you don’t want to put it off till it’s too late either. Below is a list of common items to consider.
Decide which are priorities for you and tackle those first. Then divvy up the responsibilities or hire professionals to make the best use of your time.
Summer Maintenance Tips
May 16th
🎉 Hey East Bay 🎉
Naturally, you may not want to spend a large chunk of your free time this summer doing home maintenance. But you don’t want to put it off till it’s too late either. Below is a list of common items to consider.
Decide which are priorities for you and tackle those first. Then divvy up the responsibilities or hire professionals to make the best use of your time.
Summer Home Maintenance Checklist
• Inspect your house exterior for loose or rotted siding. Power wash siding or brick. This will help get rid of any dust, dirt, tree sap, bird droppings, etc., that leave your home looking less than its best.
• Repair and repaint any chipped, cracking or faded exterior paint. Besides improving your home’s curb appeal, it will also help protect it from the elements.
• Wash windows inside and out. You’ll be amazed how much more light will stream in and how much clearer your view will be.
• Check brick tuck pointing. Also, inspect foundation for cracks or leaks. Foundation cracks can create an entry point for groundwater, insects and radon gas. Repair as needed.
• Have air conditioner checked and serviced. Regular A/C maintenance can extend the life of your unit and may reduce the need for costly A/C repairs.
• Check windows for leaks. Recaulk seals on doors and windows. This can help increase your home’s energy efficiency.
• Power wash and reseal your deck. This will help prevent any wood from splitting, graying or cracking.
• Clean out gutters and downspouts. Summer storms and high winds can deposit debris in your gutters. Even though this is generally considered a job for spring and fall, summer is also recommended.
• Clean out the faucet traps (the small screen on the end of your faucet) to eliminate clogging mineral deposits and other debris. Simply unscrew the end of the faucet with a pair of pliers, remove the trap, flush out the debris and replace.
• Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct. Without some maintenance, clogged lint and dust in your dryer vents could cause a house fire.
• Inspect outdoor play equipment. Reinforce, tighten and re-stain, reseal or repaint as needed.
• Inspect fencing. Reinforce, re-stain, reseal or repaint as needed.
• Refill cracks on cement walkway or driveway. Concrete is strong, but it can be easily damaged by standing water and freezing water that seeps in through the cracks.
Summer’s mild weather means it’s also the ideal season to take on projects like these:
• Replacing old windows or front doors
• Replacing your roof
• Replacing a chimney cap
• Refinishing flooring
• Adding skylights
• Building a deck
